It lies at the border with Austria. The research station studies the distribution of water vapor in the atmosphere (troposphere) using a laser experiment known as LIDAR.

Above the Island In this nightscape view from La Palma, Canary Islands, the Milky Way shines beyond the passing clouds which are illuminated by yellow light of a downhill town at the coast. Fast moving low clouds are formed in the Caldera de la Taburiente, a 10-km wide crater (with walls tower 2000m over the caldera floor) which dominates the northern part of the island. The caldera originated some 2 million years ago with a massive shield volcano. — Christoph Malin
